What Is Upcyling?
If you're the type of person who detests throwing away old items, and would rather save your junk and turn your unwanted objects into gorgeous DIY projects; then unbeknownst to you, you are an avid believer in the benefits upcycling. After all, one person's trash is another's treasure, right? Upcycling is the process of converting old or discarded materials into something useful and beautiful.
Recycling vs. Upcyling…what’s the difference?
Upcyling is becoming increasingly popular among millennials concerned about climate change. Recycling is great but it requires energy and resources to collect, sort and process unwanted items and waste. Upcycling is an even greener way of recycling; because you find a new purpose for your unwanted items before you chuck them away. The focus is taking disposable items and turning them into something useful. Recycling takes consumer materials (plastic, paper, metal and glass) and breaks them down so their base materials can be remade into a new consumer product, often of lesser quality. When you upcycle an item, the item isn’t broken down its base materials; you refashion it, because it’s still made of the same raw materials as when you started. Also, the upcycled item is typically better or the same quality as the original. Recycling requires energy or water to break down materials. With upcycling the only energy being used is your own and the resources used are what you need to convert your item.
